If you look at it, Windows 10 vs Server Furthermore, more robust hardware are usually built-into server hardware which only supports server OS.

Businesses runs for a long time Then back to the first statement Hyper-V server, VMware, Xen etc If you want to learn I don’t see why W10 would be a problem for a testing setup.

Otherwise if Windows server is too expensive I know it is , look into Windows 10 pro for workstations.

Why not just download the windows server eval or windows server preview version, and run it in Win 10 hyperv? I’m not sure what’s really being asked here, but my two cents is “go for it”.

The only limitation you’re likely to run into is if chosen software has platform requirements that force a “server” edition. Otherwise the only other main limitation i can think of is the number of devices that can connect to the desktop edition as a “client”.

With the desktop editions, I think that’s 5 or 10, depending on the version of Windows. This is off the top of my head, so ymmv. Good luck!

This is all home lab messing around. Mostly I’m getting annoyed with using the Windows Admin Center to manage everything the more I considered it, I was just going to nuke it and use Essentials Eval and then I thought maybe Windows 10 Pro would server my needs. I already have multiple keys for it, but if it’s not going to work to meet my needs I was going to just install ESS as the Hyper-visor and call it a day.

I do like Linux for those who mentioned it, but I’m not familiar enough with it to use it as my Hyper-visor which would place me back in the same boat lol. I did look into the number of users that could connect to 10 pro and it looks like it’s 20 concurrent users, but there is licensing in the EULA that limits connections more so than the OS being unable to handle it. Since there are few people if any connecting I think that would be fine. The default is 0 for Windows 8 only.

In Windows 8, the SMB redirector transfers payloads as large as 1 MB per request, which can improve file transfer speed. Setting this registry value to 1 limits the request size to 64 KB. You should evaluate the impact of this setting before applying it.

If SMB signing is not required, ensure that this registry value is 0 on all clients and servers. The default is This parameter limits the number of outstanding requests on a session. Increasing the value can use more memory, but it can improve performance by enabling a deeper request pipeline. Increasing the value in conjunction with MaxMpxCt can also eliminate errors that are encountered due to large numbers of outstanding long-term file requests, such as FindFirstChangeNotification calls.

You can avoid going through the steps to reconnect to the FTP server by right-clicking Quick Access in the left pane, and selecting the Pin current folder to Quick Access option. Of course, you’re not limited to use File Explorer as there are plenty of FTP clients, such as FileZilla that you can use to transfer files.

In this guide, we outlined the steps to get started with the FTP server feature available on Windows 10, and the steps to view, download, and upload files. However, bear in mind that you can only establish a connection as long as the device hosting the service is turned on.

You won’t be able to access your files when the computer is asleep or hibernating.
